    Hi

Any of you guys ever encounter a Spurgeon? Are they really as "dangerous" as people say?

http://www.fishingafrica.co.za/flying_sturgeon This is a pretty funny story about these monster fish...

But I guess if they really do cause THAT much damage, then it isn't so funny for the victims of flying Spurgeon...

It's a sturgeon. Spurgeon was a Baptist minister.

They get big. I've seen the In-Fishermen guys fishing for them in the Pacific Northwest.

We have a limited population of sturgeon in Eastern NY, but I've never heard of anyone getting clobbered by one. A quick ggogle search on "flying sturgeon" brings up several articles about folks being injured along the Sawanee river in FL.

A lot like the stores about asian carp in the midwest.

    Odd, but completely believable

Just spent a week on the Suwannee river in Florida, the Sturgeon were in the river spawning and jumping all around. Its impressive seeing a 5-6 ft fish coming 4-5 ft ourt of the water. Several people are injured every year while running the river. Had one jump about 5 ft from the boat while floating alon fishing, almost had to go back to the house and change my drawers.

I have caught small ones out of the missouri river, their skin has rows of razor blade like spines, pretty scary looking

There are sturgeon living and spawning here in the San Joaquin delta. I know people who fish for them (I dont yet have heavy enough gear) who say they are hands down THE BEST tasting fish you will ever eat (yes even better than crappie according to them). They are very highy regulated here though. You are only allowed to keep 3 per year and they must be between 46 inches and 6 feet.
