Logan Martin crappie are waking up. Yesterday morning (Monday 2/14) there were many small crappie on 6'-8' breaklines near creek channels in the upper part of Rabbit Branch. I assumed the small fish were males and looked a little deeper for females. The females were on 10'-12' breaklines, but were much less numerous/aggressive than the smaller males. Every fish I caught was off the bottom hook of a two hook bottom bumping minnow rig. I saw quite a few suspended fish on the depth finder, but caught nothing except from the bottom. No jig, beatle spin or suspended minnows got a strike. I drifted/trolled/cast very slowly. Surface water temp. was 51-53 where the crappie were active and 49-50 everywhere else, except for the extreme upper end of Rabbit Branch which was 54-55. I didn't try the extreme upper end because the water was muddy and very shallow. I am sure the water warmed and fishing got better in yesterday afternoon's sunshine, but I had to leave at 1 o'clock.
