    Default Caught my first Crappies!

So Today I went from about 2 pm to 8 pm fishing at my local reservoir Contra Loma. Since I don't have my license yet, I had to ride my bike so I couldn't bring my bass setup since my rod isn't a two piece. Bummer!! That was cool and all. I brought my ugly stick ultra light with a light reel to fish for some small game. Well , shows my luck you'll find out later. So I get there, and fish the usual spot and caught 5 bluegills. I see a couple nice sized bass swim by. Couple u-g-l-y carp. Also saw a turtle! After about 2 hours of that spot I moved onto the dock right down from me and caught 7 bluegill. So I cast out my line mind you with a small hook , and red worm on it, and get my cell phone out and call up my sister. Well, I get this HUGE hit , and I put my phone in my pocket and set the hook. This thing was ripping the crap out of my UL setup. I get it to where the fish surfaces and its a nice sized bass! Just at that point my line snaps. So I re line my pole with some crappie jigs and try my luck. I caught about 10 crappie in 30 minutes, along with about 5 more people on the dock nailing them. All around good day even though I didn't get to use my new bass setup. Oh well, their are other days.

Sounds like you don't need the bass rig. Besides Crappie are better on the table than bass.

Congrats on your first crappies! Sounds like you had a good time. Buy more ugly stiks and leave the phone in your pocket or at home.

Yes indeed. My next rod is gonna be a ugly stick for sure. Today I am heading out again. I am not a fan of eating fish too much, so I usually just catch and release unless some one by me wants them. Only fish I like is Trout, or Salmon. Never tried Crappie.

OMG you dont know what your missing. This is coming from a guy who until recently only ate ocean fish. Nothing comes close to crappie IMO. Give it a try you will love em

After you taste some crappie you'll probably never eat trout again. If you happen to ever catch a walleye while fishing be sure and cook it up. I really think you'll be pleasantly surprised about how these fish taste compared to trout.

Sounds like you are on the road to being a great crappie fisherman. Keep up the good work. I also agree with everybody else. Crappie to me is one of the best eating fish there is.
