You can get this done where you get the plates for your car, Dept of Motor Vehicles. I tried to register my trailer, and the red tape was overwhelming. I decided to leave it off and if I get a ticket, I'll just pay it. They wanted a notarized signed bill of sale from the dealer I bought the trailer from in 1998, in Florida. Sales receipts weren't good enough. I also tried to title my boat as I have held the title since 1987 from Florida, and they want the hull numbers which long since have fallen off, and they want my signature notarized that this is what happened. PS I turned in my title when I applied for a new one, and this is a 14' john boat mfg'd in 1974.

The easiest way to take care of this is to move to South Carolina. :D

NC is just getting ridiculous. Especially in Charlotte. As soon as we can we are jumping the state line. I was born and raised in coastal NC and went to college in the NC mountains and have lived in Charlotte since 1991, but it is just insane what the socialists and politicians have done to this state...... Sorry about the soapbox, it hit a nerve.

When I bought my boat I had to make 3 trips to the NC-DMV to get it straightened out. You will need to get their “little form”, fill it out and have it notarized. I suggest you take every document you have on the boat and trailer and get them notarized before you return with the “little form” to the NC-DMV. When you have them notarized make sure the notary uses an inked stamp. Make copies of everything and do not give away originals.

Not sure where you live but if it is South Charlotte make sure you go to the South Blvd NC-DMV office (near ScaleyBark and South Blvd intersection). The Nations Ford office WILL NOT help you. (and they are usually extremely rude).

Thanks for the room to rant and good luck
