9.9 or 25hp will to take care of you. You could go bigger but, what size of lake do you plan on fishing?
I was recently given a jon boat and trailer but no motor. Any suggestions on the size motor I would need for this boat. Does anyone have one they want to get rid of?

I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin' and hook up with them later.
Look on the boat for the yellow tag.It will have the max H.P rating for that boat.
I'd stay as close to it as I could. The boat will preform better in that range.>>>>Bentpole

I run a 9.9 on my 16' Jon but it is marginal on power, it doesn't push my boat fast enough to plane out on windy days. I like it though and it gets me everywhere I want to go. If you look around and keep your cash handy, a good boat motor will find you at a reasonable price. Try them out before buying, there are alot of major head aches out there.
I have a 25 on a 1754 and it runs about 25 with me in it. And thats a 4-stroke.

I found a friend with 2 motors. One is a mercury 9.5 and the other is a mercury 15. THE 15hp is only 1 year old and has 10 hrs on it. He is asking $1200. Do you think this would be a good deal?Originally Posted by ShilohRed
If the 15hp only has 10 hours on it. That would be what I would call a great dealOriginally Posted by Minnow Killer

Ya ain't holdin' your mouth right.
I am not sure, but I believe a 9.9 HP can be boosted to a 15 HP with a carborator change. My experiance with deals to good to be true is that they often turn out to be untrue. I certainly would want to see any motor run before I bought it.
