    Default Up North Fishing

Went up to Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin for a outing with my old Walleye Club members. These pictures are what we caught and keept in practice except the Small Mouths they were out of season during practice. All were caught on live bait in the shipping canal.Name: P1010020.jpg

Great pics. I'm headed up north the first week of June. We are going on the Vermilion River to try and pick up some smallies and walleys. I would like to pick up some nice pike but not sure how to get the y bone out. Can you give me ideas of how to get that bone out? Thanks,

That Y bone comes out after you cook it.Just break they fillet into down the lateral line and it pops right up for easy picking then enjoy the meat.:D

It took me alot of practice and other people showing me how they do it. I filet it like any other fish by using a electric knife and taking both sides off and skinning them. Then remove the ribs and make a cut about 1" long on each side of the lateral line at the tail. Pull the pieces apart here and this removes the part that gives fish a bad tast some times and its also holds fat along it. Throw the line away. The part from the ribs shoukd be bone less if done right. Next feel for the y bones and make a cut next to them but not hard enough to cut through them. Turn your knife and follow the bones down at a angle and remove the meat. Do the same on the other side of the bones. I get six pieces of meat doing it this way. I usualy dont keep pike under 28" to clean because the smaller ones bones seen to be softer and are harder to clean. I usually strip the latteral line out of the bigger fish I catch once you learn it it gets easier. I'll be going back up north fishig in June and if I get any pike I'll take some pictures of cleaning them and post them for you Good luck

That walleye was caught on 6# line 8 1/2' noodle rod and took 5 minutes to land. Not alot of eyes are caught during the day up there its mostly a trolling bite at night with #18 rapalas. In the fall there is a great Small Mouth bite were you can catch 50 fish a day and fish up to 7# are caught. All this on $6 a dozen minnows ( 5" suckers ) using about 5 doz. a day.
