I've used a clamp for 40 yrs. Never used a pedestal. It would be fine for me as long as it where stable.:o
I've been using clamp styled vises for years but due to the need to move around the house a lot more (kids) I have been considering a pedestal base lately. Good idea or bad, pros/cons?

........if I had sense, I wish it were..........COMMON!!!
I agree, the biggest problem would be making sure it stays nice and still which could be a problem.
I have been tying only from a pedestal the past year and have been pleased. My only tip is attach it to a piece of wood that will sit in your lap and it will work well.
I tried a pedestal and agree with Dirk it was difficult to reach across the table when tying for an extended period of time. I like my clamp on and the over the bed table (like a hospital bed table) my wife aquired for me.
