Sounds just like a Johnson. Thats all I have ever had and they all have done the same thing.
I have a 2002 50 hp Johnson and the bulb wont stay pumped and gas leaks slightly from the air breather ,there is no filter in the breather ,is this normal ,It runs great but is a little hard to start .Any suggestions ?
Thanks Jon

you have a float valve not seating or it could be the fuelpump diafram has a hole in it . tthe gas line lose from the garburator . hole finger over the end and pump the bulb . if it doesent pump up you have a hole in diafram . if it does your float isen`t sealing up or needs to be ajusted .
retired and now i will always fish
Could it be the check-valve is bad in the pump bulb?

Its normal for the bulb to go soft (but not flat) after the motor is running (fuel flowing thru it). Is your choke working properly?

Could be a broke o-ring in a fuel line connector. Do you hear it sucking air while pumping the bulb?
Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.
The bulb goes down during the time the motor is running ,it does seem to stay pumped when not in use .The biggest thing that bothers me is the small amount of gas that drips from the bottom of the air breather .The motor runs good otherwise .
Thanks for everyones input

Got a 40 Johnson, and I found that there is a small diameter line connecting to the back of the breather............... mine broke and it's a bugger to put back on........... you might be getting a leak here......

Chuck the aggrivating stuff.......... Just go Fishing!
Find a GOOD Mechanic, some try, but are not great. Good luck
I had one that did that, found that I was just pumping the bulb too much and it was actually pushing fuel out of the carb so that it appeared to be leaking while running. I just had to pump the bulb twice and then it would crank and run fine with no leakage.
