Lake Hartwell GON's Hartwell Report — Jan. 24
Level: 0.2 above full. Temp: 50 degrees. Clarity: Clear. Bass: Slow, according to Terry Whitworth. Terry was preparing for a January 29 tournament, and he said he expected spooning to be a key to bringing back a sack of fish. Ease over main-lake points and humps and watch for bait, then drop a 3/4-oz. Hopkins spoon down below the bait and start jigging.
Hybrids/Stripers: Off and on, according to guide Wayne White. On January 15, Wayne’s clients caught 21 fish; on January 19, they caught four; and part way through a trip on January 21, the fish had lockjaw. Wayne has concentrated his fishing to humps around the Portman Shoals Marina. “The pattern is to find clear bottom about 45- to 50-feet deep and drop live bluebacks,” said Wayne. “If there is timber nearby, that makes it better.” Wayne said he had been using both freelines and planer boards, but the best bite was on downlines. If you are fishing Hartwell and need live bait, Wayne has opened up a bait shop called, originally enough, The Bait Shop. It is located on Hwy 24 near the double bridges next to a restaurant called Fruit Punch. According to Wayne, the shop has more than 40 bait tanks and is a drive-through operation. For information call The Bait Shop at (864) 261-6008.
Crappie: Fishing guide Buster Greene said the fish should be holding in brushpiles in the 15- to 25-foot range. They will hit jigs or minnows, but minnows are a better bet in the cold water.
• Located along the Savannah River above Lake Russell, this lake is known for good catches of linesides.
