    Default Minnow Hook Question?

Wanted some opinions on minnow hooks.

I always use standard gold 2/0 J-hooks by Aberdeen or Eagle claw.

I have some experiences where the Crappie are all big (10.5in Ac) where I catch a ton but almost miss just as many.

Anyone ever tried bumping it up to a 3/0? And if so what are your results?

I suspect the bigger hook will help with the big boys I might be missing.

    I usually use a #2 rotating hook.

I use 1/0 and 2/0 myself biggest thing is to replace them a lot as sharpness has everything to do with hook up. Also I have learned that your not going to be able to sharpen them like they come out of the box.
Be safe and good luck fishing

Shoot ... biggest hook I've ever used for minnows is a #1 Aberdeen, and the most often used one is a #4 Aberdeen !! I've yet to have a Crappie of any size bend one open .... even when lift landing them in the 2lb+ range.

I'm just curious as to why ya'll think you need such huge hooks in the 1/0 2/0 & 3/0 category

Well, I’m this situation it was all vertical fishing with minnows about 12-15feet down in 25-40feet of water. The Crappie average size were very big but the bite was very very lite. We caught a ton but also missed about as many hits. Just wondering if the larger hook might have set easier in all the bigger crappie with the light bite with the vertical presentation.

Seems like braided line would help. Tends to be more sensitive so the lite bite can be felt. No stretch makes for a more positive hookset.

To me. Smaller hook size= smaller wire. Smaller wire= less resto the hook set
