    Question Motor question

Marine Doc, or anyone else - how much fore/aft play should be
acceptable on the prop shaft, '06 Yamaha 90 four stroke?
Not making any noises or anything, it just moves in and out further
than I think it should - and I checked, the prop nut is tight, it is the
    whole shaft moving. Thanks, Jeff

There should be minimal movement on the shaft. If the gearcase is too tight, you will get premature wear. So a little backlash is allowable.

If you believe there to be too much movement...pull the bottom drain screw and check for filings...this will be the first indication that there might be gear damage.

Wrong thrust washer should make only the prop move.

I had a 60hp yammy 2 stroke that the nut backed out causing slack. You may want to pull your prop and check the nut holding your gears in the case.
