Default Find them deep in the summer?

I'm new to crappie fishing this year. I'm learning something every time I go out. As soon as I think I've figured them out the next day it changes. Everything I've been reading and seeing says "look deep in the summer" "find them over brush piles and bridge pilings"

The other day my brother-in-law went out in search of some slabs at a new (to us) lake. We searched 12-24 fow Creek channels, flooded timber, Bridges, brush piles, you name it. We caught a couple here and there and some bluegill.

When the sun got overhead we decided to seek shelter under a "fishy" looking tree hanging over 6 fow. Joking around we said "we'll sneak in there like ninjas and catch the lake record"

To our surprise we found the mother load. We caught 4 over 1.5lbs one going 1.75 lbs in just a couple of minutes slow rolling a white curly tail jig in 6 fow.

Seems like the rule for finding crappie in the heat of the summer is there are no rules? haha good luck out there everyone and happy fishing!

Thanks! It was a blast. It cost us about $1,000,000 in jigs to the sticks that morning before we finally found them haha but the fish made it totally worth it.

Great catch! And you are correct in never assuming anything with crappie fishing!

Yep .... Crappie like shade !! Shade = cooler water & better camo/hiding conditions. Bridges, docks, overhanging trees & even brushpiles provide shade ... even "depth" can be used for shade (but only as deep as the thermocline allows).

    Good Job, guys !!

    nice haul!

I have been getting mine shallow here too. we have had a lot of rain and waters are high. I contribute that to them being up shallow still. the water is 80*+, but when high they are shallow still.
