    Default Small Victories

During my lifetime, I have had some grand and lofty goals and even managed to achieve a few of them, but today was all about a small goal and small victories. I have always wanted to try doing my own hand tied jigs but for whatever set of reasons, I never did it. Last week I finally gave it a try and today I went out to see if they were actually crappie jigs or just an arts and crafts project. I am happy to report that it was a success. It was a great feeling to catch fish on jigs that I tied myself. I know I have a long way to go with this, but I sure got the encouragement that I needed. Today is also my 56th Birthday. It will be one that I remember for a long time. Here's wishing all of you tight lines and many small victories in your future!

Way to go! It is pretty satisfying to catch fish on your own creations. It is especially grand when they're really biting one of "your" colors and the store bought jigs aren't drawing a sniff.

My Dad used to tie files professionally (for trout) and he introduced me to it when I was 7 years old. Caught my first smallmouth on a yellow jig I made by crimping a split shot just behind the eye of a streamer fly, then wrapped a yellow chenille body over a yellow marabou tail. I couldn't believe it when a smallmouth grabbed it just behind a rock by some fast water in the stream I was fishing as Dad was cutting firewood in the mountains. The strike and surprise went through me like a bolt of lightning. 52 years later, I'm still addicted. Good luck & have fun fishing with your own hand rolled flies. I hope you catch a personal best one 'em!

Those are some nice jigs, and the fish thinks so too.

And the addiction begins. Happy Birthday and good job on the pretty jigs and fish. Wonderful fishing with lures you made, brings even more excitement and satisfaction with each catch.
