I'd try creeks off the main river system, bridge pillars, stumps or logjams, and any slackwater eddy area. I'd use a weedless jig, myself, especially in any current when fishing around wood.
Never have I fished our small river for crappie but thinking I will try it this year. The depths run about 6-10 fow. How and where would you fish it?. I suppose cork & jigs on lay downs.

They really hold tight to structure in current, and hit hard. Laydowns, points that cut current, trees under the water, big rocks, they'll use them all to sit and ambush pray.
