Default What do you call pan fish, sunfish, etc...

I know different regions call fish different things. In Oklahoma alot of people call all pan fish perch. Even though they are bluegill, sunfish, even crappie. Then I see people call them bream.

Me, I say crappie, lump all sunfish into bluegill and a perch is the actual fish species perch.

    Just curious what others say

I try and call them all by their proper names, but do tend to lump a lot of the sunfish species I'm not real familiar with as "bream" (like the Pumpkinseed, Longear Sunfish, Redbreast Sunfish, & Orange Spotted Sunfish).

Growing up I called (or actually "learned" to call) Freshwater Drum ..... White Perch and I heard Crappie called "Newlights" (but only by my Grandpa). I never actually used that nickname, myself.

I like to call thing's by the real, or what I like to think is the real name. Hunter's have a bad habit of thinking up new cute names for about every thing. Can make it hard for a new guy to figure out what they are talking about. Get lost myself more than I like!

The word "bream" is used all over the world to describe local fish. (I believe it comes from a French word.)

There's a European bream and an Australian bream. Not sure about Africa and South America, but it's likely.

It gets worse when the scientist get it wrong, e.g., a Largemouth Bass(or any in that family) is actually in the sunfish family and a White Perch is actually in the true bass family along with the Striped and White Bass. No wonder we all get confused.

When I was a kid my dad called crappie "silvers".

I generally if ask what fish I am fishing for will just as a general term either say "gills" or "bream" for a general reference.

Will get more specific if actually talking about what I may be catching at a particular body of water.

In Southeast Louisiana, Crappie = Sac a Last, all other except for Goggle Eye are Perch...Goggle Eye may be known to some as Warmouth while a Perch is a Bream, Sunfish, Bluegill, etc.

We call redear sunfish shellcrackers down south, or sometimes just 'crackers, but other than that I use the proper names of fish.
