Best Way to Measure Crappie
I currently use a Frabill EZ Checker to measure my crappie. It beats using a measuring stick, but it's not always easy to get a crappie head first into the dang thing. Is there a better product out there? How do you measure your crappie?

i use one as well, gotten finned a lot to and also lost quite a few fish. pain in the rear, i have a sticker measuring tape in the front and back of the boat, i find myself using those more. well that is the very very very few times i need to measure....lol... i'm sure somebody out there has a easier measuring method, please share.

I have been using those Frabil measurers for years. Sometimes the blame fish jump right out of them but I can't find anything any better. It would be a good money making invention to come up with a better one. Got any ideas?

Expensive Crappie
On the lakes I fish in Illinois and on the Big Sandy off Kentucky Lake near Paris Landing in Tennessee, crappie can get real expensive even if you are 1/16th of an inch short. I learned the hard way. I have been checked several times since and I will always measure my fish. I think most of the length limits have to do with making sure a fish has a chance to reproduce before it is harvested, which is in all of our best interests when you stop to think about it. I don't mind measuring, I just would like a more efficient way to get the job done.

I use the Frabill but I cut a big V on the side of it. This will allow you to put the fish in there with out getting finned. Have not been finned or lost a fish since cutting the big V in it..

I also have lost quite a few fish trying to maneuver them into that darned thing, but to me its still more accurate and overall easier than trying to hold its head on one end, and measuring the tail on the other. Yeah, so im not the moost coordinated person out there.:o

If you use one of the originak ones,without the thumbbar,grab a hacksaw,slice the checker in half all the way to the point,then its real ease to slide the checker down the line and get the fish into the checker.You can get by with about 1 inch slot.bk
