My 90 hp Yamaha was not peeing real hard. I thought it needed tamsulosin but it turns out the impeller was cracked a bit. lol - some of you geezers may know what I'm talking about. I know I do!

Anyway, in my opinion, this little crack really should not have mattered that much. Either way, it’ll get replaced as soon as my amazon parts order gets delivered. Still weird though cause it really didn’t pee anything at idle, had to rev it up and then it would only trickle. Hopefully it works better with a new one.

There may be a little piece of rubber stopping up the pee tube, or it may have a UTI. :D

If you have an air compressor, I'd blow a tiny puff of air in through the hole and see if anything comes out. Wait until a real boat mechanic chimes in on how much air pressure you can blow into the tube. There may be a check valve or something in the line but I don't think there is.

Dirt dobber wasps have kept marine mechanics in business for years. I would make 100% sure the outlet tube is totally clear.

BTW, if I saw my water outlet not “peeing” at low rpm it would be in my shop immediately. Much cheaper to spend a few bucks for an impeller and the gaskets than to replace a scorched power head.

Yep! Lost a motor to dirt dobber's before myself. I had replaced the water pump the year before and didn't even think to check the weep hole to see if water was coming out. After about a 100 yards are so up the river I smelt something getting hot but too late. Learned my lesson now I always check to see the tale tale water coming from the motor when I crank her up.

Well there's your problem. New impeller will fix it right up. Even if not cracked that one should not be reused, as it has taken a set and the fingers may not be contacting the housing anymore.

A little shot of air down the pee hole will ensure that the water passage is clear of any rubber pieces.

An impeller should be considered preventative maintenance, change them every couple years even if they're working fine. Could save you a lot of money and frustration.

If it's a newer Yamaha, flush out the system with the built in flush valve.

    Slab

    Yep
that can cause a lot of headaches if not caught in time

Also as guys have mentioned is clearing the pee hole

A little insurance I usually recommend in our area from
preventing those pesky mud bees plugging up that hole
Is I usually carry a few twist ties for inserts
if exposed to the outdoors for a number of days
the twist tie doesn't need to be pushed in very far
just enough to prevent any bugs or bees laying
    their eggs plugging the hole
being a loose fit should blow out the tie should you
    forget to remove it
    Hope this helps

Keep a piece of weed eater string in your boat to ream out the pee hole, when needed.

A friend in TN used to deal with dauber too often. He whittled a small piece of dowel to fit in loosely but snug enough to stay. Drilled a hole in the other end and added a piece of nylon string that was tied off close by to catch it when the motor fired up, and held it ready to be used when he got home. Best solution I’ve ever seen for this.

You caught the impeller just in time. Everyone’s advice is sound. I hope you looked at which way it turns for the reinstall. You’ve probably done them before. Is the housing OK? Salt and sand can do in the housing. Your impeller doesn’t look terrible though it had failed. If you look and find tiny chips missing be very diligent in making sure there aren’t any blockages. Good thing we didn’t use it Tuesday.
