    Default Trying BIG baits

Got some 4" Kalin swim baits at the local salvage store and worked on a couple, cut it down some and going to try for some BIG crappie. That's a 1/8 oz head, what you think?

They look HUGE to me. I am used to using small grubs though. I would like to see the hook to stick out farther. It may be the angle of the photo but I would thread the jig near the outside of the jig so the hook protrudes more. I would also think that you need ¼ oz lead because the jig may be too buoyant because of the mass.

I'm sure I will have a lot of work to do to get it right, have not been on the water yet to even start to experiment with them. I too am worried about the hooking potential with that much plastic but I'm willing to give it a try. May be a train wreck but what the heck I like trying out new stuff.

I use some that are that long and some are even like 1/32oz. The fish doesn't know how much it weighs so when I tie a jig with a long marabou it got a long profile and I catch lot of fish on that kind of jig. I something even use a 1/4 oz jig with marabou tail right now in the spring ans they take it just fine.

The little 1/32oz custom tied Roadrunners with a full marabou tail are pretty darn long and I was catching crappie a few weeks back in 2' of water and could even see them come up and hit the jig.

I don't think they make any plastic bait with the flexibility and movement of marabou.

However this is just want I do and I am sure others do something different than I do and catch fish as well.

Here is an example of one with a long tail...

Get you some sickle hook jig heads to try with them, They have a wider gap then your standerd hooks and would take care of any hook up problems.

My jigs and crappieday's spoons and jigs use Sickle hooks.

If you just want the jig heads go to fishymemories.com

Sure they will hit it. They have big mouths and eat shad that big all the time.
