The function of a line counter reel is not specific to casting, like a baitcast reel is .... it's more suited to "letting line out" under the weight or pull from your bait rig. That being said ... I have actually made "casts" with a 14' rod & baitcast reel, so I suppose one "could" do the same with a linecounter reel, since it is in fact merely a baitcast reel with line length counting ability.

My fishing buddy uses Okumas, I use the Shakespeare ATS 15's. Mine are performing better and are a bit lighter.

The right choice. They are very good reels.

If you want a decent rod I use the Cabela's Whuppin' Stick for catfish in the med. heavy. They are $19.99, sometimes on sale for $10. I know there are better ones but I go budget too.

Don’t need heavy expensive ones for crappies.
