Those are beauties!!
Glad you made it out and found 'em. Those little pearls of wisdom that pop up now and then are great, aren't they?
Fall can be hard to find the time to get out fishing around here. Too much time gets spent getting ready for winter and hunting season. However this year I got my wood stacked early and my final project of the summer accomplished back a while so I have made it out a few times in the past few weeks.
Unfortunately the few times over the last few years that I have tried fall fishing for Crappie have not been that successful. It seems the stuff I read or watch on YouTube doesn't apply to my local bodies of water. Where to find the fish this time of year isn't where others say to check. Recently I found an article online that among all the other tips, one stood out to me. "Look for them where they are in the spring at that particular water temperature". I referred to my journal that I keep and had a light bulb moment.
So I set out this morning for the spawning area, the one place I hadn't tried. Mostly because I have never seen them there except in the spring.
The air temp was a chilly 38 degrees this morning. Water temp was 49 degrees. The wind was blowing a little bit so I had to mostly fish with a controlled drift. Sure enough I found them in shallow between 4 and 6 feet of water near fallen in trees. It was tough to stay on them with the wind but picked up 7 and kept 6. Wasn't able to fish for too long as the wind picked up significantly. Off the pond after only an hour and a half of fishing. Good to finally find the fish again though. Fish fry tonight after the football game.
