I recently retired and have got back into fishing after way too many years. Got some fine fisheries hereabout in N GA.

I have very little experience targeting crappie and am here to learn.

I fish from a kayak, and recently got a Lowrance Hook2-5 splitshot sonar, and fish a depp 350 acre lake close to the house, as well as the well-known Lake Lanier just as close. Throw in the Chattahoochee, Flint, and Etowah rivers, and other big reservoirs withing a reasonable drive Clarks Hill (Thurmond), Lake Hartwell, and Lake Oconee.

I've been catching (and releasing) a lot of bass lately, including this one from yesterday (my personal best), but looking forward to catching some crappie and bream from this lake as well, just haven't tried much yet.

I got some small jig heads and an assortment of Arky, Panfish assassin, and Gene Larew baits. I know there are some fine crappie in this lake, and I aim to learn to catch them. I don't have a minnow storage solution for my boat yet, so I'll be doing the jig. At this time of year (summer-fall transition), what depth and type of cover should I be concentrating on?

The lake facts: 81 F surface temp right now. 350 acre impoundment, county water authority, no docks, no walls, no bridges, no man-made structure to speak of. Has very lively topography, as deep as 90', with ledges, flats, old road beds, drop offs and timber galore.
