How to tell male and female crappie.

My friend said an oldtimer told him that black crappie were male and white were female,This isnt true is it ?

During the spawn most white crappie males will be darker and the pale females will have a belly full of eggs. We also have a few specks or black crappie too. The rest of the year it's no difference visable to me.:D

I can't tell the diifference. They look the same in the grease.

Son, I am an old timer. I can't tell'em apart and I 've never met anyone that could, except during spawn, and everyone knows how to do that.

I think the male kinda resembles a black crappie but not near snub nosed
