Gents,
I'm looking at a boat that has a 2003 50hp Yamaha carburated 4 stroke motor. I wish it was an EFI, but it's not. Any opinions on this type of engine would be most helpful.
thanks,

I've had four different 4 strokes, carbed Merc, carbed Honda, carbed Yamaha, and now a fuel injected F115 Yamaha. Cold starts are about the only time you could tell any difference in them. Carbed motors just need a little warmup. On another note, the F.I. motors use a computer to operate them, if it takes a crap, big expense! Seeing how you are looking at a used motor, that should be a consideration.
I have a 50HP 4Stroke Suzuki on my Landau Bass Boat and a 70HP 4Stroke Suzuki on our Landau Pontoon. Both are fuel injected.
Having problems now with the 50HP. Running very rough, normally tops out at 6300 RPM, sputters badly now at 4000 RPM...and that is as high that it will run! Other than this and a few other problems like the engine, runs very quiet when it runs, quieter when it does not run. :D Hopefully when I change the plugs tomorrow it will run quiet and not quieter!

brettw,
Thanks for the advice, hope the spark plugs do the trick, have a receipt when I had work done in 2004...bottom plug was fouled and getting no spark, they changed the plug (after diagnosing problem on their computer), motor ran pretty well until this spring.
But, how would I check the fuel? I topped off the tank last November, added Stabil. Is there a simple fix other than to have the tank drained?

My Yamaha 60 HP, 4 stroke has been great. 3 years old.
I was thinking that if after changing the plugs, and it still runs rough, you could have a small tank of fresh gas and run the motor for 5 or 10 minutes on it. If it ran better then have the tank drained.

I would just get it checked out since it's not new, but I have a 2006 75HP 4 stroke and is my 2nd one. I also had a 200 Yamaha before that. I guess you see I love the Yamaha motors and think they are the best you can buy.
Only reason I say get it checked out is you don't know what or how much the previous owner used it.
