View Full Version : Do you fish at night?

Just coming back from some night fishing at one of the local lake here is Connecticut. I have found myself fishing more at night because of all of the summer boating traffic and time. Plus I have seen and increase in fish and size because of doing it. Last night was for crappies but I have had success with trout and bass over the last few weeks... All good eating :)

Do you fish at night? If so why? Is it like me because of lake pressure or time commitments?

If you don't fish at night? Why not.

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

All the things you mentioned, temperature, boat traffic, and improved catches, are the reasons that at this time of year many choose night fishing. With some the inconsiderate boaters, skiers, jet skiers, etc. on some lakes nighttime and dawn are your only viable options. There are many C.C. threads with comments from successful nighttime anglers sharing their experience and tips available here. Safety first - wear a PFD - have someone with you - working lights (boat & utility) - checklist. Good luck.

Agree with SpeckledSlab...main reason for me is increased boat traffic and hot temps during the daylight hours. Hope you have good fishing:fish day or night.

The local lake my brother and I fish here in Pa.is a trophy bass lake. It gets hammered during the day. We have great success hanging lanterns out over the side of the boat and putting crappie lights on the water. Most of the time we have the lake all to ourselves. I love the night shift.

I fish at night alot during the summer. Nothing better than tying up to a bridge piling and breaking out the lights. I minnow fish only at night and do very little moving around. It's a great relaxing way to spend time on the water. To many drunks, pleasure boats and jet fleas here to fish during the day during the summer.

With work and family it's sometime s easier for me to make it out after dark. Like what others have said wear a pfd, tell someone where your going and don't speed in the boat:crazy:

Something not mentioned yet, and very important. Know the area that you will be fishing and keep check the weather forecast. I have fished at night until one Saturday night and just can't bring myself to put that night aside, although it was an unusual situation. Went back into a finger off of a lake I have fished dozens of times at twilight and set out the lights got to fishing. Boated a few and had a friend nearby and long about 10pm a fog rolled in. Dense fog. Fished a while longer hoping that the temps would change and visibility would improve, but they didn't. I hollered at Randy and told him I was headed out, turned on the GPS and idled toward the main part of the lake. Glad I had the GPS as twice along the way in as I was going in the direction that I thought was right, the unit showed I was headed for the rocky bank. There was also a bass tourney going on and it wasn't far from weigh in time. Twice as I was going along at idle, tooting my whistle now and then, I heard boats fire up and take off fast, too close for my comfort. Visibility wasn't any more than 15 to 20 feet at any time. A bit further along I got to the main part of the lake and a much improved visibility. I went to the ramp and I can't remember having night fished since. Always enjoyed it but I fish alone a lot and just don't feel the need any longer. I hope your experiences are all better than mine but break out the old Boy Scout Motto and Be Prepared when you go.

Yea night fishing does have its risks and bad fog is one of them. I find that we dont have that much issue here in the North East. A good GPS and supplies are critical. I find that with work and kids it is the only time I can get out on the water and it has turned out to be really fun! I appreciate everyone's input
