To scent, or not to scent, that is the question? For anglers it’s not a question of why scent products work, but that they do increase the number of crappie they can catch. Lucky for anglers several companies have easy to apply crappie specific scent products in different formulas.

North Alabama crappie fishing guide Lee Pitts spends countless hours on the water guiding anglers on Weiss Lake aka Crappie Capital of the World. “Weiss Lake’s reputation as being the Crappie Capital of the World brings in thousands of anglers a year and puts an extreme amount of angling pressure along with boat traffic each year. I can really tell that crappie are getting wiser as I’m trolling with multiple rods out. To trick them into biting, I trick them into thinking the soft plastic Bobby Garland Crappie Baits are real by spreading some Mo’Glo Slab Jam on them,” said Pitts.

Pitts (www.leepittsoutdoors.com) noted it’s the same thing as a hunter removing the human or negative scent from their clothing. He doesn’t want any negative scent from gassing up the boat or sunscreen on his hands that could get on his lures when changing or adjusting the lure.



In addition to applying Bobby Garland Mo’Glo Slab Jam (www.bobbygarlandcrappie.com) sometime Pitts will attach a small scented pellet to the hook making it more attractive. “One other tip I can give you about scent is I put a little Mo’Glo Slab Jam on my fingers in the morning so every time I touch the lure it is rubbing the scent onto the lure. That way, I know for sure the crappie are smelling something they will want to bite,” said Pitts.




One scent that crappie anglers are going crazy over is Crappie.com SlabSauce. I knew many moons ago about the sensitivity of a fishes nose and read countless articles and did research in the field and asked about a billion questions .
it started for me 40 plus years ago and I know without a doubt its a big deal on anything artificial and even sometimes on live baits .
crappie and lots of other fish as well , use those fish nostrils BIG time and scent matters .
nice read and for sure not all scent enhancements are created equal as well .....just saying

I have tried many scents over the past 65 years that I have been fishing. I remember my dad and I making our own scents as far back in 1953 when I was only eight. He would experiment with different oils and anise and I guess that has always been in my mind to invent the things or items that would make my fishing better. Over a decade ago I found crappie.com on the internet and immediately became a member. Years later I was blessed to actually meet Ed Moes when he was in Alabama. I really enjoyed meeting him and picking his brain about fishing. Still through the years I have always been fascinated about fishing scents especially when I began to make my own soft plastics. I made spray on scents. I infused scent into the hot plastic. I bought scents from Wal-mart and also Cabelas and a few years back was the first time I actually tried "Slab Sauce" made by Ed Moes. I have done many tests for myself over the years. I would even spray on different scents into the crappie nibbles to try and get an edge over whomever I would be fishing against.

In all honesty they all had their advantages and some even had disadvantages. That is how I learn. I am a hands on person. I liked a lot of the home made stuff that I personally made. I liked some of the recipes that I found on the internet for making scent and used most of them too. I said all that to say that even though I am not a professional, I recognize what worked best for me. That was "Slab Sauce" and I have just ordered "Garlic Slab Sauce" again for the third time. Even an old dog will come home when it is dinner time. The crappie here in Alabama seem to like this mixture just a bit better than what I mix up so I will always have some in my fishing vest. Some of my biggest crappie and those of my fishing friends have come when we sprayed 'Slab Sauce" on our stinger lures. I am Shipahoy41 and I approve of this message.
