Brett, they're subject to using just about anything if it's in the right place. Case in point : seen a TV angler catching bedding Crappie on the lower unit fins of outboard motors on boats parked in slips. I've caught them off the stationary posts of marina boat slips, myself, and seen Bass use the lower unit fins of motors on boats in a covered slip. I've seen Blacknose on the beds on top of a rockpile that was on a point not 20ft from the corner of a often used fish cleaning station (at the end of a covered boat slip dock) and in less than 2fow.

Right place, right depth, right temp, and right time ... they could be almost anywhere. They do have their preferences, but when those are not available they'll use whatever has the most conditions for a successful spawn.

Yes, they use docks and poles on my lake, especially if the bottom is gravely, or the water level is lower than a normal year.

I figure solid wood like stumps or pallet stake beds would be better choice .

They use the best hard cover available. Rocks, wood, grass exs.

The few lakes that I fish up north here they will spawn anywhere. From mud flats to brush, fallen trees and aquatic plants. Some spawn deep and some shallow. Last year I found a hump that topped out at 13 feet and the fish were on it thick. And a quarter mile away they were in 3 fow. Each trip is a search and find process.

We have crappie here that spawn in tires use as surf breakers for marina's. It's a perfect place to spawn when you think about it.
