What color is the stripe on the cal?
I have never needed one before, but I am searching for a 68' 20-hp mercury lower unit. Does anyone have any suggestions, or one they have laying around somewhere?
What color is the stripe on the cal?

The cowling is the cover on the motor. It will have a colored stripe that goes around it. You can tell the time period, the motor was made by this stripe, if you can't tell by the serial number. I have a 20hp Merc. built around that time, but can't remember exact year. The stripe around the cal. is RED

I would first check E-bay.
Then go to http://www.themarinedoctor.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl
There you can find all the info you need.

I read the serial number to another boat motor guy here, and he told me that it is a 1968 model. He didn't have any. I can get the serial number if you still need it...let me know. Also, how much for one?
