I had someone tell me today that if you put several onion slices in your grease while frying fish, it will keep your grease from burning. Anyone ever heard of this? (Of course, you eat the onions with the fish and add new slices for each batch :D )

I don't know about the grease part, but if crappie like garlic, surely they wouldn't mind the smell or taste of onion.
Every time we cook fish we add onions. It does keep the grease from burning and the onions are eaten before the fish :D .

I will not cook my fish with out them. That extra flavor is great and so are the onions. I also do the same with my fries, hush puppies, and mushrooms.
Interesting! Must try!
Currently a non-fishing slacker! (not for too much longer)
Will give this a try. I love onions and the extra favor to the fish, fries, etc. would be great.
We've got to try this. My wife is always having me pour out burned oil. Do you batter the onions also or just put them in raw?
I would love to get ahold of a good Bloomin' Onion recipe also.

I have heard that if you put a potato in your oil & cook it for a while after you fry fish it will take the fish taste out of the oil. Anyone tried this? Whole, cut up, peeled, unpeeled? Here are some blooming onion recipes. Let us know if you try one. http://www.recipezaar.com/70382
Crappie fishing is my lighthouse of sanity in an insane world,
It keeps me from crashing on the rocky shores of everyday life.

Frying potatoes after fish will take the fish taste out of the grease.
