    Default Too many shad.

I know it sounds crazy, but two of my favorite winter time crappie haunts are completely plugged with huge shad. The baitfish are so thick that the electronics can't penitrate them. The fishing is slow, and when you do catch one it is fat as just before spawn. The shad are threadfin, and uniformly 4 inches long! How do I deal with these fish?

When they are in a ball and you see crappie around them, I push jigs though them and hope for a reaction bite. Otherwise do as Ketchn said. Some times using a small jig will do the trick.

I move of to the side of the bait and look for cover that a few fish might be holding near. I have never done good among the millions of bait, but I never tried Ketchn's idea though.

4 inch crank baits around the edges of the school of baitfish.

Try fishing on the outside edges of the school.

Why do fish swim in schools?

First and foremost, schools protect fish from their enemies. It's the same rule our mothers taught us as youngsters, always stay in a group because there is safety in numbers. Predators find it far easier to chase down and gobble up a fish swimming all alone, than trying to cut out a single fish from a huge group.
Be safe and good luck fishing
