    Default Barkley 9/8/17

Snuck out a little while today, first time I have made it out since they messed with the water levels. Nice and cool early, just a bit of fog. Barkley has definitely got a nice rich color to her right now. Found some fish early where I expected to and didn't find any at all in a bunch of areas I thought I would. Waded off into some real quality fish in area I really didn't expect them to be in at all. Kind of one of those days, barely hooking fish even though they were biting pretty aggressively , most fell off in the net if I landed them. Of course barely hooking them inevitably leads to losing several and while I never like losing fish, this will be a day I won't forget for a while. Nobody believes "the one that got away" stories anyway so I am not going to elaborate more than I lost 4 really nice fish, one black crappie that will haunt me a long time. But considering this is the time of year I have least experience on Barkley and has been pretty challenging for me in the past, could have been alot worse.

"one black crappie that will haunt me a long time"

Funny how we all probably have, or will have, an experience like that. Mine involves an 18" white crappie laying on top as the boat moved away right after my wife hung my crankbait up in the net and knocked the crappie off. She was crying "Do something!!" like I could go back and scoop it up in the net. After a couple of seconds, it tail-flipped and was gone. It was a solid 3++ pounder, biggest crappie I've seen around my boat in 30 years. She still tears up when it is mentioned.

It has kind of got a hold on me, I have thousands of good waypoints on Kentucky sitting idle for no real earth shattering reasons. I just like Barkley. She can be a tough nut to crack sometimes though, still a bunch of folks that live minutes from Barkley ramps and trailer to the big west side Kentucky bays. I almost gave up when I first started trying to fish it three or four years ago.

I seem to have a knack for it, I got excited in the rain one day last year and threw the net into the jig and knocked another giant last year.

Literally had dreams of big crappie swimming away out of reach Friday night, Lol. Oh well, at least I know they are in that part of the lake.
