Default Shout-out to Slab and Hurricane Irma question.

Ed, best of luck to you and all Florida/GA/SC/NC members who will be affected by Hurricane Irma. If you are having to get out of hunker down, my prayers are with you, as they still are for all those still affected by Harvey.

Now my question; I'm seeing predictions of storm surge numbers up to and above 12 feet. I know these will affect areas like Ft. Myers, where my in-laws recently sold their home, but how far inland can these surges be expected? My concern is for an area like Lake Okeechobee. I understand it is several miles inland but what might be the damage if it did sustain a surge of salt water?

My grandfather fished it from the late 80's until 2006. At that point, you had better chances of catching a few in the canals rather than the lake.
Four hurricanes hammered the lake in August and September 2004, pretty much ruining the lake. It has taken years to get back to where she is now, and another storm on the horizon.
I am unsure of storm surge potentially getting to the lake but rather the flood waters, salt water mixing in (brackish water) and pollution that comes with it damaging the lake.
I did hear on the news days ago they were in the process of lowering the lake in the event of flooding.

I'm not real familiar with Okeechobee. It's roughly 3 hours south of me. I thought I heard there are canals that can be affected by a surge, so I'm sure there's some damage that could occur with a large storm surge. Others more familiar can chime in. The St. Johns is closer to me and I know a surge can push it in a ways. Thankfully, although my water system is connected to the St Johns, there are locks up stream that should prevent anything this far away. I'm a long ways from the ocean on either side. Pretty much in the middle of FL (an hour straight north of Orlando). I'm worried about the wind. The forecasts for my area have changed from about 50 MPH winds, to 100 mph winds. NOT GOOD

So I'm battening down the hatches, hoping this house will hold out through it. I guess we are gonna see. Wish me luck.

Our prayers are with you Ed and all who will be affected by this monster storm. Harvey in Texas was nothing compared to what Irma will do to Florida. We are also praying for our military, doctors and first responders as they help individuals recover.
