I'm gonna throw out a guess and say you have your sensitivity turned up too high

Without knowing how deep the water really is, you may be getting echos if it really is only 8.5ft deep. But, if it's deeper than that, whatever is causing the swath of red is so dense that it's blocking enough signal to make the unit "think" it's only that deep.

I've run across a school of Shad that was so thick that my unit read 10ft deep (top of the Shad school) when I was actually in 25fow.

You may need to turn your sensitivity down or turn switch fire (max mode) off as it doesn't work real good in shallow water.

The water was 8ft. The sensitivity was set at 12 out of 20. Switch fire is on clear mode. No matter what i do with the sensitivity i dont get arches just lines.

At the moment you took those pictures, were you sitting still or moving along, say at 2-3 MPH?
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.

I would have to assume, based on your last pic, that you are seeing crappie. How fast was the boat moving when you shot these images?

I'd say a moderate drift it was a windy day. Motor off just drifting with the wind. So if indeed im seeing crappie how to i clean the pic up some. Im catching plenty of crappie just don't understand why my sonar looks like this. I'd like to be able to differ from fish species and bait
