    Default Bandit 200 question

Trying out trolling for some crappie in 15-20 feet of water in the channel of the lake. Would trolling a bandit 200 do the trick? Ive never trolled for crappie before so any advice would be welcome

Depending on the depth of the fish, 8-10'= 200's, 300's from there down. I use 300's for all my cranking. just measure your line out.

IMO too many folks make a huge mistake by thinking they only have to worry about getting a crank as deep as possible. Your electronics will tell you how deep you need to run your cranks. Suspended schools of crappie or baitballs should be your only concern. I catch most of my crappie by watching my chart plotter and 2D sonar screens. If I'm running in 25 feet of water but the baitballs are 10-15 feet deep, I only worry about finding a crank that will run 10-12 feet deep. I want my crank in the top 1/3-1/2 of the depth of the baitball or school of fish.

A school of crappie or bait that is 10-15 feet deep won't give up many catches if the crank is running 18 feet deep. Crappie feed up and I am only worried about putting my bait in their face or slightly above.

If I'm scouting an area, I will run 6 or more rods with baits that will run at a wide variety of depths. I use the Precision Trolling Data app on my phone to tell me how deep a particular bait SHOULD run. I say should because the data is based on 10 pound test mono or braid. It is also taking into account that a crank is running true and attaining its maximum depth. In a real world that is not always happening. I use 12 pound Trilene Big Game Solar Collector mono. It has saved me 75% more hung up baits than 10 pound mono. I do sacrifice a slight amount of depth by using 12 so I have to take that into account.

By watching your electronics, it will take the temptation to only worry about the maximum depth of a crank out of the equation.

Speed does not affect running depth, for the most part.
