They work on the premise that the fish's mouth will be closed when you set the hook, so the cam action of the hook will turn the point up/down and make contact with the inside of the mouth ... rather than the lips or membrane ... giving you a better hookup, with less likelihood of tearing a hole in the membrane & possibly losing the fish (if you give any slack or the fish flops or turns).

To my way of thinking ... they're "technically" sound in that idea, but a regular Aberdeen hook has about the same percentage of possibility of doing the same thing. I wouldn't call them a "gimmick", but I wouldn't give them any greater credence than a normal hook.

But, I'm also saying that from limited use of them, and no recent use of either style.

What pappy said. Eagle Claw used to make a hook for plastic worm fishing named the 45 automatic. It had a curve in the shank that when pulled between closed lips would turn 45* putting the point into flesh instead of a flat hook pulling free between those same lips. I used them a lot and they did the job. The tru turn works on the same principle. Before they came around we were using regular offset worm hooks and they were pulling thru and we missed a lot of fish. So we bent the point a few degrees off of the same line as the shank, and upped our catch rate about 25% and we stopped missing so many fish. Point of it all, yes they do work better than a regular hook in my opinion. The longer shank also makes them easier to remove from bluegill and such.

A friend showed me one of his true turn hooks. I told him I wanted to borrow it for a few seconds. I took my needle nose pliers and bent my regular gold eagle claw aberdeen hook the same way and he could not tell which one was which. Once you learn where to and how to bend the regular aberdeen hooks they are way cheaper than the true turn hooks and work just as good.
Be safe and good luck fishing

I think they do work if I'm fishing with minnows that's all I use.

I've always liked them, thought I got a better hookup due to the cam action and the light wire/fine point. Haven't been able to find them locally lately and started using an Eagle Claw model that has a curve in the shank that accomplishes the same thing - and they seem to work as well. But if I run across any more TruTurns, or have reason to order online from a place the sells them, I'll buy more.

I have been my own also. I like the red hooks and have never seen them with the bends. Only use them when minnow fishing.
