Default Can u explain structure scan?

I'm looking at buying a hds 5 gen1 lss 1 setup with 2 head units, transducers and all wiring. Can someone please explain what is the difference in having the structure scan? I saw it on my brother's boat and liked it but not sure what would be better. I Been looking and reading about Garmin, hummingbird and lowrance units but have not been able to find were it explains it. Also I read that down image will only work above 2 mph and side scan will work at 0.1 mph. Is this true and what are opinions on the structure scan vs other units?

First, the info on the speeds is incorrect, altho there are optimum speeds for these beams and displays. I am seldom moving more than .5 mph and I see representative shots of what is down there. When you say structure scan does that mean Lowrance or are you referring to 3d or side scanning/down scanning in general? Youtube can be wonderful in this as there are lots of vids over there to cover this. Reps of most major brands have uploaded tons there and you should find some helpful data. BBC has some great forums and reference mat'l. And the stickie on our side/down imaging forum is full of impressive information. Lots of info out there to help. Basically the si/di beams that transmit are somewhat like an old funeral home fan, very thin beams that are sent to each side, or downward (if present on your unit). 3d IDK. Someone will be along soon to give you much more intelligent feedback on all this than I have so far. Good resources here.

StructureScan is the Lowrance terminology of scanning sonar technology (as opposed to conventional 2d sonar) - which would include DownScan and SideScan...

Scanning technologies basically "aim" the crystal elements in the xducer housing differently to collect different echo data under the boat (different is how a 2d crystal element collects echo data) ... And then processes that echo data into picture like images in the display ...

Thanks for the replies. Yes im talking about lowrance. I found a good deal on the set up just not sure the structure scan part of it. Does the Lss box give better options than hummingbird or Garmin? If yall was going to recommend a unit that was $ 500-600 range what would it be? With the hds 5s and lss1 system I have found.

Can't help you with that. No recent experience with Low. so I would not be the one to offer anything. Sorry. I am certain you will get a quality setup. Have seen some awesome pics with Lowrance.

HDS with LSS 1 module and LSS 1 xducer is a good Setup ...

Several opine that LSS 1 has better DownScan than LSS 2 ...
