Who uses spoons for crappie? Tips and tricks ?

I use them ice fishing with good success.

I use small single hook spoons often. My buddy makes them. I double rig them sometimes. I fish them just like a jig vertical with slow rise and fall or deadstick them. Crappie seem to like them best when they are hitting still and slow presentations. This time of year I use cast and retrieve jigs more. The spoons I use when its colder.

I have seen an old timer that was hard core crappie and he pitches a micro spoon tandem rigged with a jig above it .....of course the crappie wouldn't cooperate that day but he hammered a big hybrid on that spoon under a bridge while we were visiting with him

I have only used spoons when fishing from shore, utilizing the count down & retrieve method. I like the smallest size KastMaster spoons or Swedish Pimples, both with single hooks. Sometimes I'll put a small section of a Fin-S Fish tail on the single hook. After the initial count down I start a retrieve and stop presentation, letting it settle a bit and start again. I find this presentation works well when the crappie (or bluegills) are suspended in the water column.

I haven't tried them for crappie but they are my go to for hybrids.

I vertical jig spoons often with boastable success. I make most of my own spoons. One is from a 1/4 oz lead mold and the other I call a flutter spoon is made from a blade for an inline style spinner.
