Default How big of a bait will crappie eat?

During a search I found an old thread on the subject. I have found 2 crappie floating in distress because they tackled something to big to handle. 1 was 14in with a 6 in gizzard shad lodged it's throat, the other war 12 in with a 4in bluegill. I removed the prey and both crappie revived and we're released

Well I've cleaned some with 4in shad in them. When I was a teenager I caught a couple while bass fishing with a 6in fluke, now this was in my grandfathers farm pond and they where very big crappie. They do go after big pray some times. I don't think it's very often but in the right conditions yes they will eat a big bait.

Well, since I've seen the following :

6" Crappie hitting a Bandit 300 (on my rod/buddy's rod)
12" Crappie hitting a 4" plastic Craw (on my rod)
    12" Crappie hitting a 1/2oz spinnerbait (on a buddy's rod)

    (and also)
A 5lb Largemouth with a 3lb Largemouth stuck in its throat.

    (all fish were released)

I think fish don't always "think" about what they hit, they just go for it & sometimes their "eyes are bigger than their stomach" (as my Grandparents used to say).

This c55 crankbait is 4 1/8" without hooks. I don't catch many shorts on it but this one decided he wanted to make a new friend.
