Default Trouble With Tilt and Trim

I have a 1993 48 horse power Johnson with tilt and trim. Here recently I have had trouble with the tilt being extra slow or not even tilting the motor up. It has locked down somw times in the lowest position and I have to loosen a small screw that is located beside the hydraulic motor. I can then manually pull the motor up. There is also a large screw that is besides this little screw. Can anyone please help me out. I am trying to avoid buying a $350 tilt and trim motor. Please Help

you could have air in the trim motor or lines you need to check your fluid level with the motor all the way down. fill it to the proper level and try and cycle it several times to get the air out of it. if this doesn't work you pump is worn out most likely. make sure to check all lines and fittings to make sure there is no leaks where it could be drawing air in to the system. good luck and good fishing.

I had a similar problem a few years back with my 75 horse Mariner.
My problem turned out to be an "O" ring.
Mercury would not sale the O ring by itself, they wanted like 20.00
for all the o rings in the unit. 75 cents got it at Napa:D
It took me about an hour to replace it.

You need to make sure the hydraulic pump is putting out the pressure needed, and that takes a gauge. If the gauge says it's got enough pressure, then it's a bad cylinder. Not enough pressure, bad pump or not enough fluid.
    I have a jig with a face like this!

    Default tilt

Take the cover off and on top by the flywheel there will be 2 small square plug ins. Faceing the motor it will be on the front right. One is for up and one for down. I replaced mine and got a spare. I think they were $18 each.

It sounds like you have an o ring down or you are low on fluid.I would try checking the fluid level first.Chances are if you had a trim relay down it would not do anything on either the up or down side.
