Anyone put a motor on a 8' Jon boat? What size of engine did you put on it? Anyone run an electric trolling motor? Any info is appriciated.

Electric is all I would do on something that small. Honestly, I wouldn't get anything more than a 30# thrust. Too much power on a small boat can turn into a very bad thing.

'Tis true on a little fishing boat! My buddy Warren has a home built 8' runabout with a 20hp Mercury powerhead, runs 35-40mph on a good day.

My best guess based on hp rating I've seen on 10' jon boats is gonna be only 3hp. I have a Minn Kota 40 on my 14 footer, and is a little quick even with a load. Just be careful standing up in the boat.

A 2-3hp motor will not push your boat much more than 5mph anyways......

I have a ten foot jon and I use a 5 hp johnson on it .......The motor has no gear box so you rotate it 180 for rev. It is a twin and is very light and ideal for a small boat like that.

I got a 30# Motor Guide on my 10' jon, does great on calm water, going move up to a 50# this year for extra power in wind and current.
