    Default Trolling motor question

I usually slow troll for crappie and striper but both of my old trolling motors are too strong. I've got a 14 foot V-hull jon with a good bit of weight on board. I'm 300lbs, my fishing partner goes about 250, plus all the gear.

One motor is a Shakespeare Sigma. It's about 25 years old, 25lb. thrust, and it has 3 forward speeds. The other is a Motor Guide, about 15 years old, 34lb. thrust with 5 forward speeds. Both of them on their lowest setting is WAY too fast. I went striper fishing about a month ago and I had a bunch of shad water skiing up behind the boat.

Does anyone know of a simple way to slow them down or of another $100-$200 trolling motor I could buy to fix the problem? Can anyone help?

Turn them around and troll backwards. The flat transom slows down the boat.

good to see someone else out there besides myself that uses old equipment but it is still good, use plastic buckets of different sizes, like driftsocks don't have to be very big

Hey there kid, What you need is a Maximizer by Minn-Kota. There are still a few floating around on E-Bay from time to time. Here is a pic of mine.

I can dial mine so slow that you can count the revolutions of the blade! I also spiderrig with slip corks and I can set it so slow that the corks hardly ripple the water!
I just set the speed and leave it running all day...just steer!!

Can you buy the Maximizer new or did they discontinue them? I checked ebay and couldn't find one.

Take a dremel tool or file and start shaving down the prop.

Hey Kid, They haven't made them in over 15 years. But about once a month 1 or 2 will show up on E-Bay. Most are new never used! Expect to pay 100.00 to 150.00+
Just keep checking..one will show up!
