Default pieces of a newspaper article about Weiss Lake - Alabama

Jason Tucker took a good look at the bait in his hand and spoke succinctly of the significance of the jigs color. "Blue blue blue," he said during a morning crappie fishing trip on Weiss Lake. Through much experimentation, he had discovered what would attract the larger fish during the day. Blue blue blue. A lot of other different colored baits would have brought crappie bites as well, he said, but this was what would attract fish that met the 10-inch minimum length requirement. There were other factors leading to a productive half day of fishing as we prepared to "spider rig" for catches. Not only was the bait choice a key to nearly 300 catches for us, including 60 legal sized fish, but the location was a factor. Spring Creek, the Weiss tributary flowing out of Lookout Mountain where we fished, continually produces temperatures that crappie prefer. "Spring Creek is a natural 56 degrees coming out of the ground," Tucker said. "So this means that the water is naturally warmer than when the water on the lake gets into the mid-40s. The crappies look for warmer water then." Only about 200 yards away, the water was 8 degrees cooler. Doubtlessly, Tucker's skill in operating the trolling motor at just the right speed was another factor in our success. Tucker caught a 3-pound, 14 ounce crappie on a blue and chartreuse jig in the little river arm of Weiss one March. Other people caught crappies weighing more than 4 pounds in the lake last year. This was in the Chattanooga, TN paper. Weiss is a great lake if anyone has thought about giving it a try. It was once called the Crappie Capitol of the World.

Default Been there, done that .......

Slow trolling and "spider rigging" is the methods of choice for the guides. I suggest J.R.'s Marina to stay at, and launch from. If looking for a guide - ask for Mr Green.
The Little River arm is right around the corner from J R's Marina ... and the creek that J R's Marina is in, is also a good place. Casting around docks, blowdowns, any submerged brush ... and slow trolling the channel of Little River were the methods I used - and most trips were successful.
And YES ...... blue/blue/blue was a very popular color combo, even then ...LOL!! However, we were pretty satisfied with our success ... using the BPS Sparkle Squirt (blue w/metalflake & Chartreuse tails) on a 1/16oz Oldham's Sure-lock Weedless Crappie jighead. (and the occasional Chartreuse Roadrunner) .........luck2ya .........cp
