Best advice i ever got was from a game warden. He told me they use a golden rule, better to use the same ruler they use so there is no argument over a fish being short! I have seen guys get tickets over using the ones the fish slides in because some fish will not slide all the way in end up being short.

When fishing Ms. we tried using an easy style checker. We soon found out that the fish there were to thick to slide all the way down and that would have resulted in short fish. I also had a golden rule and we started using that and have ever since.

I carry a 3' Stanley tape measure in the watch pocket of my jeans. Or you can use a Sharpe and mark your measurement down from the closest line guide to your reel.

10" size limit, never had any that needed measuring that were to thick to fit
Use a sharpie to highlight the 10" mark to make it easier
