    Default Tying with hackle?

I've finally got where I can make a half decent jig with hackle but it seems like there is an awful lot wasted after using the tips. Can anything be done with the rest of it?

you can tear off the webbing and use it to tie smaller jigs.

I use strung neck hackle and use all of it except the pointed end. You just lay the feather on a cutting board and use the point of a sharp knife and cut the vane at the desired lengths try not to cut little feather fibers it should give you 1/4 to 1/2 inch fibers sticking out past the end of vane and you just wrap with thread and chenille give the feather a little twist and pull a little out away from hook at an angle before thread gets to end of vane makes the hackle fuz out some. I use two or three vane cuttings per jig depending on fibers two is what I was taught. Hope this helps. Also don't know proper names of parts of a feather.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to do some more experimenting.
