starter problems
Anyone ever took on rebuilding their own starter? I'm sort of torn on whether to just buy a new one for 150.00 or get a rebuild kit for 19.00. I've never done this, is it something a novice could do?

rebuild kit has the brushes and bushings. I don't know anything about starters, It just don't jump up all the time and when it does sometimes it will crank and sometimes it just makes a noise like it's slipping.

it's not that hard. It's just a plain in rear puttin in he bushing. You might try to oil it. Put so light oil on the shaft that turns. Will not last long but might help.

I sprayed some WD40 on it, thats when it started to sound like it was slipping. I may have put to much.

The little gear that engages the flywheel is called the bendix. It needs to be lubed from time to time. I use white lithium grease in a spray can. Try to direct the spray inside the bendix.
You may also need to remove and clean all the electrical connections. Don't spend any money until you do that.

What do you mean it sounded like it was slipping? That could just be a bad bendix. If the brushes are burned bad, the commutator may have to be turned on a lathe. Also, have you considered having it rebuilt? Any good auto electric shop can rebuild it for you and make it like new at half the cost of a new one.

If by slipping you mean is sounds like it is just spinning like a top instead of engaging the flywheel then its the bendix. I had mine rebuilt by a starter shop here in OKC last year and that is what was happening to me. The marine mech. said it would cost around a hundred bucks to get me fixed up but the starter rebuilder took about 30 mins. and charged me 25 bucks! Hope you get it figured out. JT
