depth control for cranks

What do you guys do to get your cranks at the proper depth? Let's say I have a crankbait that dives to 15 feet. Do I just tie it on and fish it? What if I want to push it? do I need to use a weight?

There are depth tables for most baits on the market today that will tell you how much line you would need to let out to get a particular bait to a particular depth. For a deep diver like you mention, you are not going to be happy pushing it. Smaller shallow to medium runner baits are much better for pushing behind a 2 oz weight or larger.

I use a 2oz trolling weight that I get from monks crappie.com that way I can put them down to what ever depth i want them. The weight is molded with a piece of wire in it tie one end to rod and the other end has a barrel swivel on it. I use bout a 2' leader tied to the crank bait

Yeah I troll jigs and crank baits together. I know a guy that has a guide service and he uses minnows all the time

one more question: 2-3 oz of weight seems like a lot for my 10 ft Slab Shaker. Will the rods troll OK with that kind of weight-without being overloaded?

Probably not I've got 8 of the bass pro 12' crappie max tight line specials. You might could use a 1oz on them you'll just have to try and see what works
