Learn something new every day. I called every fish similar to this a bluegill when I was young. Still haven't learned the proper name for most. Crappie, bluegill and redear, but trying to teach my son the right names

Rusty ... check this site out for sunfish ID's : Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Sunfish
Not mentioned is the fact that a Warmouth has 3 spikes on the anal fin, and more rounded tail fin lobes ... as opposed to the Rock Bass, which has 5-6 spikes on the anal fin and a more angular tail fin.
You also wanna keep those Rusty, those things will kill a crappie or any other fish population fairly fast, especially in small bodies of water.. they are good in the grease, but I never turn them back either way ;-)
Thats good to know snubby.....thanks
I agree, in river systems, large lakes or reservoirs they pose little concern. In small lakes and ponds they can become an issue if left unchecked. I prefer to catch crappie and bluegill personally, rather have those two native species over the warmouths. I've seen two fairly large ponds overtaken by them, and heard of several others. So guess to each his own, but they are edible and fun to catch.
