    Default Catching Minnows

The ponds by my house are full of minnows, so instead of buying minnows I decided I would just get a minnow trap and catch my own. What is a good bait to use in the minnow trap? I have heard things like a potatoe, or an onion. Somebody please help.

Be carefull when trapping minnows. Put my basket out in a pond and when I went back it was full of a very large and stuffed snake. Dead thank godness. He had eaten so many minnows he was too big to get back out.

I've put trap after trap out but never got more than a few. So I bought a 1/4" mesh cast net last year and never have trouble catching enough bait. Bread, dog food, potted meat, just about anything for bait.

    Thumbs up

....dry dog food/bread/crackers/etc. will work, but in my experience the bait will sink to the bottom/sides of the basket and the minnows will eat the bait from outside the basket, rather than swim inside...so...here's what I did: place crushed dry dog food in a small net mesh bag suspended from the center of the upper portion of the trap-may have to use a small weight on the bottom of the bag to make sure it's suspended halfway down in the trap......they gotta go in to get to the bait....hope this helps...

My dad always used a slice or two of white bread -- worked every time.
