Float switch

Installing a float switch to my existing bilge pump. Is the brown wire the hot or positive wire? Other wire is black, which I think is the negative lead but wanted to verify before I splice into it

Yes Ray brown hot black negative

That's interesting since it's a "switch" shouldn't matter, unless there is a diode involved.

Are you also adding a 3 way switch (On-Off-Auto)?

No, I am splicing in the float directly to the battery. I want to be able to turn it on by the switch and have it come on automatically if the float switch tips without the panel switch being on. That is why I need to splice it to the hot side of the pump.

Yep....You got to keep the bilge area cleaned out around them......leaves , dirt, and other debris will mess them up......mine has a float switch and a manual switch and this summer I plan on adding a second bilge pump wired the same way. It dosent hurt to be too safe.

I got mine wired in today and seems to be working fine. Had a scare at first because after I spliced in the float switch and had it working, I went up front and hit the switch there and......nothing. After some head scratching I started tracing wires.(The bilge pump was installed by the previous owner, not the factory). In the process of moving everything out of the way, one of the wires from the switch got broken.
Splice that and sealed it up and everything worked as it should.
This started out as me replacing the aerator pump, but while I had everything out of the way, I decided to install the float switch.
