Default 55 lb thrust motor on 10' jon ?

I have a 10' aluminum jon boat ,about 100 lbs. Would a 12 volt 55# thrust trolling motor be to much ? would it drain the battery quickly ? How much faster would it go than a 30# thrust ? Any input at all . -Thanks

you wont have to use all the power all the time and it will be fine on the battery, it will make it alot better for you if you get in to current or wind, so I would say go ahead. if you get a biiger boat in the future you will have it, and wont have to get a bigger one

I second that Crappieday. May not need all that power but when you do it is really nice. You won't regret it...believe me.

Unless the TM is digital, you use the same amount of battery power no matter what setting the TM is on. What isn't used is just wasted on a non-digital motor.

    I ran a 55 on a scamp (2 man plastic boat)
It worked fine, though the 42" shaft was sort of overkill (long)
Funny, but it didn't seem to really go as fast as I thought it would.
I believe it pushed my 18' jon about the same speed. Something to
do with the pitch of the prop, I'd imagine.

    Default 10" jon

    Never enough power!!!:D
On my 1436 Jon and 36# motor I believe I could go about 3 mph or hit 4 every now and then if wind helped. If you want to run to the next spot, that is where it gets used, and trust me you will. With a boat that small Id look at one of the power clear props also. You will also need 2 batteries and there will not be much load left for person #2. Next WHEN:p you get a bigger boat you will have a motor that you can transfer. I would say you will not break 6 mph, wanna race?:D

I think it would pull it plenty fast enough, and like said earlier, you won't be using all that power all the time. What kind of jon boat do you have? I have a ten foot jon boat and it only weighs about 34-40 pounds empty. And I bet a 55# would pull mine like a 5 horse motor.

Hey kyron4, I have a 2003 1875 hunt and fish Polar Kraft with a 50 lb motor guide on the front of it and it is plenty. The 55 lb might be to much power for your jon boat if it is on high. I would make sure I was sitting down if you hit the switch or turn one way or the other if it is on high you might go for a swim if your not careful.
I would just be careful in the boat if you mount it on there, lots of power for a small boat but it should get you around very well. You won't have any trouble with the battery. I can fish all day on mine no problem and it is only a 12 volt.
