Default Using the outboard to slow your drift??

I was on reelfoot lake today and saw what I thought was strange. I saw two boats spider rigging in the front of the boat with the outboard running in reverse to slow them down. Was fishing in just 8ft. Of water. Does this actually work? I would think the sound of the running engine would spook the fish. By the way I only caught three crappies

Seen Whitey Outlaw on a show with his boy single pole fishing in SC in small jon boat and small tiller motor. They would just go from brush pile to brush pile and would never shut motor off.

new one on me also, but motor running in reverse would slow you down as it's pulling you backwards.

Hello: Walleye guys have been doing it forever. But they usually fish out the side of the boat, no spider rigging. States like Minnesota only allow 1 rod per angler. Good luck this season. O - R

Sounds to me like backtrolling. The wind would have to be tremendous to have the effect of "slowing a drift", unless I'm missing something here?

I would think if you're fishing in a creek or river with very much current it'd help some especially if the wind was at your back.

The wind was around 10mph and was at his back. I'm guessing the outboard was at idle and in reverse. I wouldn't have brought this up,but I saw not one but two different boats doing this.I never saw them catch a fish, but there wasn't much of that to see anyway.

I would think a 4stroke would be quiet enough. Chains would have been better in my opinion though.

I don't think the engine "noise" is as big a factor as the backwash water disturbance might have been. Chains may work, but they can also be destructive to the bottom cover.

Maybe what they should have been doing was approach their spots going into the wind.
